Keep your number: call forwarding and SIP explained

Your customers already know your number. Here's how to put a LightMove.ai agent behind it, and what to ask your phone provider.

Changing your phone number is a non-starter for most businesses. It’s on your signage, your website and in your customers’ contacts. The good news: you don’t need to.

Option 1: forward calls

The simplest setup. You get a number for your agent in LightMove.ai, then set your existing line to forward calls to it. Most providers let you choose when:

  • Always, so the agent answers every call.
  • When busy or unanswered, so the agent only picks up when your team can’t.
  • Out of hours, using your provider’s time-based routing.

Option 2: connect a SIP trunk

If you run a business phone system or work with a VoIP provider, you can point a SIP trunk at LightMove.ai. Calls arrive directly, without forwarding, and the agent can transfer back to extensions on your system.

What to ask your provider

  • Can I forward calls conditionally (busy, no answer, out of hours)?
  • Do you support SIP trunks, and can I route a number to an external SIP address?
  • Are there charges for forwarded minutes?

The setup steps are in the docs under phone numbers and SIP. If you’re a VoIP operator and want to offer agents to your own customers, get in touch.
